With the help from Santa and Mrs Claus the town of Rock Hall held the lighting of the Community Crab Basket Christmas Tree Lighting on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017. The tree is located in the center of Main Street and is constructed with over 200 crab baskets.
Last year the town, following the lead of Cambridge, which created their Crab Basket tree in 2014 to honor the water man, began their new tradition of a Crab Basket Tree. What makes this tree special and unique is that the baskets are hand painted and decorated in memory of loved ones. The spirit of “the Pearl of the Chesapeake” is expressed through the structure.
Actually there are two trees since there were more baskets created then needed for the one tree.
The Community Crab Basket Christmas Tree was constructed by local resident Ziggy Carter and Town Staff. The staff from Chester River Seafood and Shore Goose played a great role in the decorating of the baskets. The crab topper was crafted and designed by Buffalo Strong. Proceeds from the memorial basket sales will benefit the Rock Hall Parks and Recreation Board to implement future programs for children.
Earlier in the evening Santa arrived by boat to Rock Hall’s Harbor with the Kent County Community Band playing seasonal music. The Fire Company transported Santa to Mainstreet where he paraded down the street to his house at Rock Hall Village.
